EXPAND. YOUR BRAIN.

SPOT ON: Ramiro Lopez

Being one of the most respected producers in Techno today, Ramiro Lopez, despite his ongoing growth and storming success, he's doing it for the right reasons: He's in it for the music.

Here's what he shared with us in this exclusive interview for VOLTAGE.

Ramiro hi, thank you for taking the time to talk to us, hope everything’s great with you!

Hi guys, my pleasure!

It’s no secret that Techno has been exponentially growing over the last couple of years worldwide. This means that more and more people may want to start producing their own music and get a chance to start a career. On the other hand, others believe that the Scene has become saturated due to over-supply of music, DJ’s and labels. You, as an established artist with years of experiences, would you recommend someone to chase their dreams in Techno?

Of course! Everybody should chase their dreams. There are lot of labels, DJs, etc. out there and it´s very difficult to make a career nowadays but not impossible. If you really want it, work hard and have patience enough, you can do it.

Do you think that techno is mainstream, today?

Luckily, techno scene is in a great shape at the moment.  There are many and many supporters every day. If this means it's kind of mainstream -I think so- but nothing wrong about it!

It´s an amazing thing to me. In my opinion, the most people embrace techno music, the better.

Let’s talk about the label you run with Arjun Vagale, Odd Recordings. It has a really defined sound and a specific character, an element that is being appreciated by people that seek quality in Techno. What are your plans for the label in the future?

Keep releasing music that we love, make the Odd family growing and spread our sound and philosophy as much as we can. We are organizing some showcases around the world and we have lot of exciting releases on the pipeline. Looking forward to show them to you all.

What about you as an artist, you’ve been producing since 2006 and your own productions seem to have a mixture of elements taken from various genres, but we can identify one definitive ingredient in each and every single one of them: Groove. What is your motivating force, in other words, what drives you and what is your vision for your own career?

My main goal has been always make the people dance, enjoy and have good times through the music. I try always to keep evolving, doing what I feel and keep on making this forever. Music is the thing I love the most in my life and Lucky to do it for a living.

What are the artists that made you go into techno and which are your favourite, all time techno tracks?

Carl Cox, Adam Beyer. Richie Hawtin, Ben Sims, Cristian Varela to name a few.

Lauren Garnier – Crispy Bacon
Vitalic – La rock
Steve Rachmad – Virton
Paul Ritch – Run Baby Run

There are more but these are on my top 10!

What is your favorite piece of gear inside your studio? The one that you use most?

I’m working mainly with software nowadays and I use Native Instruments a lot.  I have the Komplete Kontrol since 3 years ago and love it. It´s totally integrated with the NI and Arturia plugins, and this make the workflow so fluid.

What was the most unforgettable moment in your career so far?

Hard to pick one …. But for example, I´ll never forget first time I met Carl Cox. I was dancing on the dance floor and he invited me to the DJ booth after playing 3 demos of myself in a row. I was so nervous I barely could speak!  Also I´ll never forget first time I signed on Drumcode.

You’re no stranger to Athens’ Techno Scene, you’ve rocked the crowd every time you performed. What is your message towards the Athenians, that are waiting for your appearance?

I love the Athenian crowd! They are so enthusiastic and always had had a great connection with them. I´m sure this time will be superb as well. Can´t wait!
